Top 5 PITFALLS in Golf Course Aerification:

1. Failure to sell Aerification in the budget as basic cultural practice:

Many Superintendents are canceling out Aerification in favor of other budget items. The lack Aerification is a short term solution in the budget, but may grow into a long term problem later on in the season. We advise not to put off Aerification. It is vital to root establishment, Turf health, and overall Turf conditions

2. Improper soil moisture

Adequate soil moisture is vital, necessary, and achievable. We recommend our customers water heavily to saturate the soil beneath a week before our arrival (depending on rain and weather conditions). We then recommend reducing watering 48 hours before we arrive. This achieves a moist layer below and a semi dry surface, a perfect combination for pulling a nice healthy plug and efficient clean-up.

3. Lack of communication and coordination with the Pro Shop:

We understand the problems of golf course maintenance and Pro Shop tee times .We also understand the frustration members can exhibit when their course is covered in plugs. We recommend you take time to explain to both the Pro Shop and the members just how vital Aerification is to their future playing conditions.

4. Clean-up process:

The objective in the clean up process is to stay right behind us, while not letting the plugs "marbleize" resulting in impossible cleanup. The most common mistakes we see is an inadequate amount of clean up equipment. For example, we recommend 2 drags instead of one and 2 blowers to remove the debris.

Links Aerificaton Plus is extremely efficient in its work. Our operators are trained to work a fast paced style, while giving you, the customer, the results you demand. We have a policy that we like to live by; get in, get done, and get out. This is the best and fastest scenario for getting your members back out on the links.

5. Biting off more than you can chew:

Do not try and schedule too many other maintenance activities during Aerification. This is a very important tip that we try to convey to our customers. For example, the clean up process needs be the number 1 priority of the day, not just another maintenance activity. We suggest to always plan ahead. We will notify you if we are not confident in the weather conditions, and we will NEVER leave you or your establishment in a state of panic.
